Junior Emily Gibson (Toronto, Ontario/North Toronto Collegiate) picked up her second-straight tournament win on Monday (2/22) as she bested the field of 59 competitors at the Ann Rhoads Shootout hosted by Birmingham Southern College. Gibson and the University of Mobile's Maegan Rice were tied with a tournament best 149 after two rounds and had to go to a playoff.
Gibson and Rice tied after the first playoff hole which forced the pair to go on to the second hole. Gibson's tee shot found the center of the fairway while Rice's hooked to the right and into the woods. Gibson's second shot found the green and was about 15 feet from the pin. Rice had to knock her ball out of the woods and back onto the fairway for her second shot and then her third shot fell about 20 yards short of the green. Finally on her fourth shot of the hole she found the green but Gibson only needed to two-putt to win the tournament. Gibson's first putt was just wide of the target and rolled about two feet past the pin. She then drained the tournament winning putt to seal the victory.
The Falcons only entered three golfers into the tournament so they did not receive a team score.
Sophomore Emma Breen (Swindon, England/Kingsdown) also had a standout final round as she shot a seasons-best 76. That final round catapulted her from eighth after the first round to fifth overall after the final round. She shot a two-round score of 158 just nine strokes behind Gibson.
Freshman Kayla Witt (Gardendale, Ala./Gardendale) also turned in a career-best final round as she shot an 87 which was 11 strokes better than her first round score. She jumped 12 spots in the standings from 41st to 29th.
The Falcons will return to action at the Samford Intercollegiate Invitational on March 15-16. The tournament will take place at Limestone Springs in Oneonta, Ala.
